Here is a typical modern approach to how God appeared to Elijah in 1Kings 19.12:
Today's Theme: Finding God In The Everyday | Thoughts On Today's Scripture: In a world of constant noise and activity, God often speaks in unexpected ways. When the prophet Elijah stood on Mount Horeb, God demonstrated His presence not through powerful wind, earthquake, or fire, but through "a still small voice" (1 Kings 19:12). This teaches us that God often communicates in the quiet, ordinary moments of our days. How many divine whispers could you have missed while waiting for dramatic signs? God invites us to develop ears that hear His gentle guidance in everyday life, during morning coffee, evening walks, or the quiet before sleep. Today, challenge yourself to pause, create space for silence, and listen for God's still small voice speaking into your ordinary moments.
There is absolutely nothing in Scripture that encourages us to listen for a divine whisper. What Elijah witnessed and heard was certainly not an “everyday” event. The point above, that we need to pause and create space for silence, is most worthy, especially in our day of constant internet noise, but to hear God speak we must go to Scripture. It is in the Sacred Letters that we will become wise for salvation, 2Timothy 3.15. The will and plan of God are revealed in Scripture.
Jesus used it to explain everything to hard-headed followers, Luke 24:27:
Then starting with what Moses and all the prophets [a way of referring to the whole Old Testament] had said about him, Jesus began to explain everything that had been written about himself in [all] the Scriptures (EXB).
Read the rest of Luke 24 for this continuing emphasis.
The Bible is the basis for all knowledge of God's will. Don't listen for a still, small voice. What you hear, if anything, will be your own thoughts, not those of God.
