Despair is perhaps the worst of emotions, for it immobilizes and keeps one from advancing in life. The worst of despair is that which feels sadness for sin, for nothing can be done to remove sin or cancel its effects.
This is why the Psalmist’s phrase is encouraging:
Though we are overwhelmed by our sins,
you forgive them all.
Psalm 65.3b NLT
In Christ this forgiveness is definitive. It doesn’t mean we can’t be lost, for unfaithfulness throws one back into sin, but remission of sins is real, lasting, and transforming.
So the mark of a Christian is joy. Not the superficial type, but the profound satisfaction that knows that despair has been removed forever.
Glory to you, Lord, for redeeming us from our sins!
