A bigger issue than the devil’s power

People sometimes discuss whether the devil could have fulfilled his promise to Jesus when he offered him authority over all the kingdoms of the world, Luke 4.5.

First, we must remember that the devil is a liar and uses lies to tempt people.

In the narrative, however, there is something of greater importance than his ability to deliver the world’s kingdoms to Christ.

Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”
Luke 4.8 NET

Only the Almighty deserves worship. Only the Lord is worthy of our devotion. Only God keeps all his promises.

Even if the devil could have given to Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, the Lord would have failed in his mission. The ease with which he would have acquired his power would not have gotten him anywhere.

Let us worship God only, for his is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen! (Matthew 6.13 HCSB).

  1. Wow. I preached from this very text yesterday, and said some of the same things. I’d say great minds think alike, but I don’t want to insult you 🙂

What do you think?
