“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do what I tell you?
Luke 6:46 NET

Just talk. That what the person does who calls Jesus Lord without doing what he orders. Without obeying Christ’s commandments, faith is vain.

The words of Mary still apply: “Whatever he tells you, do it” (John 2:5).

The parable that follows Jesus’ question reveals destruction for those who ignore his words.

Just as in Jesus’ day, many religious folk who speak well of Jesus will be lost.

I hope you don’t find yourself in this group.

Sovereign God, thank you for revealing the word of your Son and for giving us access to it. May we be not only hearers, but doers, of his word.

Extra: This verse is part of what’s called the “Sermon on the Plain,” and corresponds, in its sentiment, to Matthew 7:21, in the “Sermon on the Mount.” A number of details seem to indicate that Matthew and Luke registered two different moments. After all, what preacher has never repeated a sermon?

What do you think?
