When Others Talk About Us

Today’s devotional thought, brought to you from Brazil and translated into your English tongue.

Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you.
Ecclesiastes 7:21 NIV

“What did he say about me?” We want to hear everything that others say about us.

Better, perhaps, not to know. We all say stupid things and criticize others in moments when we let down our guard.

Such comments edify no one, not even the one who speaks.

Much less the target of the criticisms.

Why, then, do we want to know what others say when they are least inspired?

It will only serve to hurt ourselves and our relationships with others.

  1. We truly should not search for untrue rumors or putdowns about ourselves. We are who we are. That is in no way changed by who or how many speak poorly of us. That kind of talk serves the devil (if we give it our attention) to lower our self-worth, pull us away from the work of God. It becomes hard to stand up For Christ if we doubt ourselves instead of knowing who we are: Servants and Children of God. We are who we are in Christ and that is enough.

  2. Or not even true ones, I’d think, as well. You’re right that that kind of talk only serves Satan’s purpose. Glad to hear from you, Kathie, hope you are well.
