We knew and failed to act,
And now we reap the wind;
Our eye was blind to fact,
We did not move, and sinned.

By wish no change is made,
Nor life by dream transformed;
By sweat the bricks are laid,
By the ax are bodies warmed.

Blood is the price of peace,
By zeal is justice served,
The plow is the field’s increase,
By arms is freedom preserved.
