READ: “The greatest among you will be your servant” Mt 23.11.
THINK: In the body of Christ, values are inverted. False religion seeks titles, positions, and honors. The follower of Christ seeks opportunities to serve, necessities to satisfy. Desire to be important spawns fights; desire to serve, peace. Continue reading
READ: “My commandment is this—to love one another just as I have loved you” Jn 15.12.
THINK: The perfect love includes one’s enemies, Mt 5.48, but focuses especially on the family of faith. Love is not a feeling, but the decision to do good to a brother. As always, Christ is our example in this. Continue reading
READ: “For where two or three are assembled in my name, I am there among them” Mt 18.20.
THINK: “Church” means meeting or assembly. The saints meet regularly to worship God, edify one another in the Spirit, and teach the Word of Christ. In the meeting, we find forgiveness and unifying action. So this is not an option, Hb 10.23-27. Continue reading
READ: “God is spirit, and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth” Jn 4.24 NET.
THINK: The worship of God’s children must conform to his character, rational acts revealed by him. We do not choose how to worship him. As Sovereign, it is he who determines how we approach his presence. The must is what he requires of us. Continue reading
READ: “Therefore, although God has overlooked such times of ignorance, he now commands all people everywhere to repent” Acts 17.30 NET.
THINK: Repentance, a commandment of God, is the decision to change. We abandon idols (our preferences) in order to serve God, 1Th 1.9-10. God no longer permits the ignorance of the past. Continue reading
READ: “and how from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” 2 Tm 3.15 NET.
THINK: Faith comes by hearing the truth in Scripture. Faith has to have content: in Christ. It is the initial condition for salvation. What’s important is to believe in Jesus and let that faith lead us to obedience. Continue reading
READ: “He summoned the multitude, and said to them, ‘Hear, and understand'” Mt 15.10 WEB.
THINK: There is no salvation without hearing the Good News. It is possible to hear and understand. It is not too difficult. Jesus spoke his message to the multitude. He meant for everyone to hear, not a select group. We all have the responsibility to hear and understand. We will be judged by our hearing. Continue reading
On the Portuguese devotional site, we began today a 52-part series on the actions of the follower of Christ. Below is the first in the series.
READ: “He who believes and is immersed shall be saved” Mark 16.16 MEG.
THINK: Whoever obeys the commandment of the Lord Jesus knows he is saved, according to his promise. Salvation is based, not on feelings, but on the reality of Christ’s offering and on the possibility of verifying if we are saved or not. See 1 John 5.13. We can be sure of our salvation when we obey what Jesus commands. Continue reading
