You know that when you were pagans you were often led astray by speechless idols, however you were led. 1 Corinthians 12:2 NET
What is spirituality? This was a critical question in Corinth. Paul establishes the criterion: spiritual is he who hears God’s revelation through the Holy Spirit when he speaks about Jesus (v. 3).
The Corinthians were following their own criteria, as they did before they became Christians. Idols communicated no truth, so they created their own concepts.
But this is a thing of the past. One’s own ideas must be discarded, in order to the the truth of the Spirit.
What, or who, is spiritual? He who has the Spirit. He who has “knowledge” which comes from God. All Christians are spiritual and this undercuts any effort at distinction or discrimination.
Father, may I base my faith always on the knowledge that comes from your Spirit, without inventing or adopting from elsewhere. May I always act guided by the knowledge of the truth and not by emotion or hunches. In Christ, amen.
