What is the religion that God accepts? Not all religions are created equal. Religions often are made to deceive oneself. Many religions have no value whatsoever before God. Here’s one requirement of the divinely acceptable religion.
If someone thinks he is religious yet does not bridle his tongue, and so deceives his heart, his religion is futile.
Jas 1.26 NET
James uses the noun “bridle” in Jas 3.3. There’s a connection between the two texts. If you can control your tongue, you can control your whole body, Jas 3.2.
What does God want, then? A self-controlled life. He gives his Spirit for power to be self-controlled. It is a fruit of the Spirit, Gal 5.22-23. It is available and, more, a requirement.
If you don’t get control of your life, you won’t get God’s approval to enter eternal life.
Salvation is by grace, and one of grace’s requirements is self-control.
Get it together!
