I read a prayer yesterday that asked, “Teach me to recognise your presence in others.” While there might be a danger lurking behind this request, thinking that God is in everyone regardless of their disobedience, it is a wonderful request when turned toward the body of Christ.
one God and Father of all,
who is over all and through all and in all.
Eph 4.6 NET
The prophets and apostles continually recognize the Godhead in Christians, Rom 8.10; 1 Cor 6.19; 2 Cor 13.5; 1 Jn 4.4. Jesus himself promised the he and the Father would reside with the loving, obedient soul, Jn 14.23.
A recognition that God is present in a brother or sister would go far in motivating us to treat all of God’s people with the greatest respect. Many a harsh word would be choked off before it were uttered. Many an unkind deed would be prevented as soon as it were considered.
Every word and act would then seek to enlarge and cultivate that divine presence in others. Awareness of that presence in the few and of its lack in many would push us to share the Good News so that others might welcome God into their lives.
Seeing where God is will make us also feel keenly where he is not. It will also cause us great joy to know that he has come to some and still desires to be present with all.
“Teach me to recognise your presence in others.”
