Nobody likes to discover when they’re wrong, even in unimportant details. And on major issues, don’t even mention it!
When they heard this they became enraged and began to shout, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
Acts 19.28 NET
This is how the Ephesian craftsmen reacted to the proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ and to the possibility of losing their source of income, v. 25. For they had a vested interest in promoting idolatry. Their life was invested in a lie.
Isn’t that the same for us? Truth requires that we give up the benefits we reap from the lies that we embrace in our life. Rather than rejoicing in the truth and the blessings it brings, however, the common reaction is to clamp our hands over our ears, shout our lie loudly, and persecute the one who sought to share the truth with us.
To keep from falling into the same situation as the Ephesians craftsmen, let us be intense seekers of the truth, willing to accept and live it whatever the cost.
True and living God, open our eyes to the truth that we need to hear and confess.
