The inevitable impalement of progressives, because they know that they know better than others: “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” (1 Cor 8:1).
A few years ago I wrote a lesson on 1 Corinthians for a Sunday school curriculum, which included this:
The Corinthians thought they were being more mature, more spiritual, by going beyond the restricting rules they had received, but they showed their immaturity by disregarding God’s commands. They believed they were more knowledgeable — hence, superior to others. This led inevitably to arrogance (3:18-21; 4:6-8; 4:18-21; 5:2; 8:2; 13:4). The same problem affects the church today. Some believe they have learned more about the nature of God’s grace and can therefore disregard his commandments. Though they speak a language of toleration, their language and demeanor are arrogant.
