Pray not for ease

Pray not for ease,
For earthly gain,
To be free from pain—
Ask not for these.

But ask instead,
For faith to grow
When hard winds blow
On the path ahead.

Ask to be brave
When scoffers rail,
When brethren fail,
When you near the grave.

But most and first,
Make love your plea,
On fervent knee,
Your deepest thirst.

These prayers recite,
For these God heeds:
To grant such needs
Is the Lord’s delight.
