Poem: Upon the Altar

Here’s the background for today’s Cloudburst poem, “Upon the Altar,” sent by email to the list.

Today I started reading A.W. Tozer’s classic, “The Pursuit of God,” and by the time I finished the second chapter a poem was forcing its way up from the depths into consciousness.

In about 30 minutes on the couch, as Leila read in her bedroom, and Vicki typed and printed out some homeschooling tests, I jotted down the lines into a green Norcom composition book with my blue (Cross?) fountain pen. (Thursdays are our day off.)

Without a direct reference to the event, the poem uses the call to sacrifice Isaac as the background.

The passage about Abraham’s sacrifice is found in Genesis 22.
