A burst of twittering out my window
Pulls my eyes away from my task,
Transports my ears to skies and branches,
To flit and sit for avian talk
Of winds and worms and sunning wings,
Of baby beaks and sprouting seeds,
Of human rush and heavenly care,
Of simple life in grateful tunes
And daily search for water and bread.
Returning to my task before me,
I breathe deeply and smile at God,
The furrows in my brow now lighter.
