After one or two examples of verse,
Some surfers tire, and leave my site the worse
For reading poetry. I blame them not.
For many, a poem is but a stain, a blot —
A stubborn blot — upon straightforward prose,
A foreign name given to a local rose.
Few they be in this new world who read,
For fast and short and lazy be their creed.
