One of the great differences between the old and new covenants is the type of blessings received as a result of the people’s obedience. Note these verses.

All these blessings will come to you in abundance if you obey the LORD your God: …
Deuteronomy 28:2 NET

The list following Moses’ statement contains physical blessings. Now from Paul:

Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ.
Ephesians 1:3

The list that follows Paul’s statement contains innumerable spiritual blessings.

The theology of prosperity, as does most of Christendom in one way or another, fails to distinguish properly between the two covenants. Let us avoid this mistake.

In Christ we do not have the promise of financial prosperity. We have every possible spiritual blessing already at our disposal, a situation more desirable by far than any physical advantage this world contains.
