Called in a special way, through a vision by Jesus himself, as he traveled to Damascus, Saul still needed to hear the gospel and obey the Lord by being immersed in water in order to be saved:
And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be immersed, and have your sins washed away, calling on his name.
Perhaps the apostle remembered his own baptism when he wrote to the Corinthians, “For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12.13 ESV).
Nobody escapes from the need to obey the gospel, not even an apostle called by a miracle. Not me. Not you.
Why then do we think that God will excuse us for our lack of obedience?
Father, thank you for the opportunity to obey Jesus. What a great privilege and solemn responsibility! May nothing keep me from guarding your commandments in Christ. Amen.
Hold this thought: The gospel applies to all equally.
