People are in spiritual need, but until they recognize the nature of that need, they will seek to satisfy it with a physical or material solution.
This soon fails, so people either ramp it up, or swap it out with equally poor options.
Thus begins a vicious cycle.
Else people are overcome by fear or lack of willpower and live in a perpetual state of frustration, sadness, or disgust.
Our task, like that of our Lord Jesus Christ, is to move people from talking about well water, or their current perceived need, to consider the Messiah, their true need.
Then salvation can occur.
The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (the one called Christ); “whenever he comes, he will tell us everything.” Jesus said to her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he” Jn 4.25-25 NET.
