Serving God is more than life,
To please him is more than man’s esteem;
What power to walk in holy light!
All other paths are hard and steep.
The Liar’s way is best, he claims:
He smooths the bumps and opens doors,
But hides the truth, and in festive clothes
He paints the painful face of death.
He’d have the saint think holiness
Is hard! But evil casts the soul
In darkness, weighs heavy on the neck,
And deafens the ear to peaceful sound.
Christ is true — God in the flesh,
Of all that’s good and right, the fount;
Without him, men will fall and flail,
In him is every blessing found.
