Fairly close translation of last Friday’s Portuguese-language meditation.

One who has isolated himself seeks his own desires; he rejects all sound judgment.
Proverbs 18:1 NET

Selfishness isolates one from the community, from the family, from friends, if not physically, then emotionally and, yes, spiritually. As much as one might have contact with people, selfish interests distance one from others.

Isolation is a consequence of selfishness.

Where do we learn to show solidarity with our neighbor, to “be concerned … about the interests of others”? (Philippians 2:4).

Following Jesus’ example! (Philippians 2:5-11).

When we are “in Christ” — and that means being in Christ’s community –, we are given the opportunity to learn this change of interests (Philippians 2:1-4).

The world has nothing to teach us in this regard.
