In God, not ‘the slightest hint of change’

God never changes
God is always the same

All generous giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or the slightest hint of change.
James 1:17 NET

They say that one of the trials of living with an alcoholic parent is never knowing how he will react, whether today he’ll be nice or mean, whether he will ignore the child or beat him.

What a relief to know that what God is today, he will be tomorrow! What God says or does today, he will say and do tomorrow. The verse above tells us that this sameness or, better, this constancy, means goodness and generosity on God’s part.

The sun never ceases from its path in the sky, throwing shadows that constantly move. God doesn’t change, but emits an invariable light. In an unstable world, this truth of divine immutability provides us a firm rock.

Everything and everyone changes, but we can count on the comforting certainty that God is always the same.
