This will probably go out to UPLift tomorrow, but I’ll stick it here now.

DON’T MAKE THE HOLY SPIRIT SAD

by J. Randal Matheny

Don’t make God’s Holy Spirit sad,
By rotten words from lips escaped;
Say something good of value, add
What’s missing with a phrase well shaped.

Be a blessing to those who hear,
For with the Spirit you were sealed,
A sign of God’s to whom you’re dear,
Protected until the Day’s revealed.

Remove all bitterness, anger, cursing,
With kind and tender hearts behave;
Forgiveness always be rehearsing,
Just as God in Christ forgave.

The passage upon which this is based is Ephesians 4:29-32, in the Simple English Bible, which is marketed today as the Great Book or some such similar title. It had Jack Lewis, Hugo McCord and Clyde Woods as translators, among others, I hear. I have a 1981 edition in minature type.

I was working on this passage, among others, for our Bible study Sunday, on “Attitudes Contrary to the Spirit,” or sins against the Holy Spirit. And this kinda sorta popped out.
