What are your defects and disadvantages? Now, think of these as a great advantage in God’s service. That’s what the author of the letter to the Hebrews does with Christ’s humanity.
So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming high priest, but the one who glorified him was God, who said to him, “You are my Son! Today I have fathered you.”
Hebrews 5:5 NET
When the Hebrews thought about Jesus, perhaps a disadvantage in their minds was his humanity. If he was the representation of God’s essence (1:1-2), why then did he seem so … human?
This was his honor. And our advantage. For now we have one to represent us before the Father.
What Jesus said to the people in his day, about himself, fits the Hebrews. And us. “Do not judge [me] according to external appearance, but judge with proper judgment” (John 7:24).
