Many accuse God of not being good, because they blame him for the evil they see in the world. It’s the same as the murderer accusing the judge of being guilty of murder.
In the previous verse, the writer speaks of being “afflicted.” He also suffered at the hands of evil men. But he still refused to question God’s goodness.
You are good and you do good.
Teach me your statutes!
Psalm 119.68 NET
Humans don’t know what is good, unless God reveals it to them. In his essence, God is goodness. His beneficent acts have their origin in his goodness.
If God is good and does good, then we should desire to know his orders. For these also demonstrate the divine goodness. God’s law will also be good for us, even if we don’t recognize it as such.
Good God, teach us what goodness means, in order that we may be good as you are good.
