We live in the age of Facebook, the most visited site on the Internet. There, people compete to see who has more friends. In the midst of this race, we need to hear an ancient counsel:
A person who has friends may be harmed by them,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18.24 NET
Casual friends abound, until the money runs out or some catastrophe falls on one’s head. Afterwards, they disappear quickly. “A poor person is disliked even by his neighbors, but those who love the rich are many” Proverbs 14.20. True, unselfish friends are few.
But many friends aren’t necessary, nor is it possible to have many. A single good friend is worth more than a thousand acquaintances. One version understand “sticks closer” as meaning “more faithful.”
Our Father, I am thankful for friends who share the same faith and show solidarity in my need. May I be a true friend.
Hold this thought: God gives us friends for mutual joy.
