jonahsinkingHow was it that Jonah was fast asleep in the ship, when it was buffeted by a “great wind” of this “mighty tempest,” so strong that it threatened to break up the ship? How can a man sleep so deeply in such a storm, where the ship would have been tossed like flotsam before the winds and waves?

A sign of deep depression? Had he taken a sedative before lying down? The story says he was “fast asleep,” so I’ll not challenge it’s affirmation by charging Jonah with pretending to be asleep.

Perhaps not only his body, but his soul as well, was in flight.

Jesus also slept in a boat during a storm. I dare say his was from being at deep peace with the Father and from exhaustion at serving others.

Some contrast!
