Overall, the English Standard Version appears to be a solid Bible translation. But I, who have a fair grasp of English, required repeated readings to understand a phrase in Nehemiah 1.9: “but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your dispersed be under the farthest skies, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.”

Bible Gateway has the verse exactly as above, also.

The Revised Standard Version, of which the ESV is a revision, has the phrase as is: “but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your dispersed be under the farthest skies, I will gather them thence and bring them to the place which I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.'”

The word “dispersed” here is a used as a noun, not an adjective, as we are accustomed to using it, so it makes the phrase appear to have something missing. Seems to me it could be said in a clearer way.

What do you think?
