Don’t wrangle over words

Quarrels never reach a conclusion, never solve a problem, never convince an opponent. Human words do not bring people near to God; on the contrary, to proffer opinions or speculations is the way to ruin.

Remind people of these things and solemnly charge them before the Lord not to wrangle over words. This is of no benefit; it just brings ruin on those who listen.
2 Tim 2.14 NET

This is not merely good advice. It is a solemn charge. A charge carries the weight of a command (see NLT). Timothy is to command in the presence of the Lord that quarrels end. God doesn’t want to hear such!

This verse contrasts with verse 15, which points to Scripture as the way to approval before God and to salvation for others.

God who speaks saving truth, may your words be ours, may we speak when the Bible speaks, and be silent when the Bible is silent.

Hold this thought: When the Bible is closed, close your mouth.
