The Good News has unlimited power to transform. God forgives, causes to be born again, transfers from one moment to the next from the kingdom of darkness to his kingdom of light. In the same way that Jesus’ cures were instantaneous, God’s spiritual action is immediate.

Jesus went throughout all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of disease and sickness among the people. So a report about him spread throughout Syria. People brought to him all who suffered with various illnesses and afflictions, those who had seizures, paralytics, and those possessed by demons, and he healed them.
Matthew 4.23-24 NET

No doctors, no medical treatment, no recuperation, no gradual improvement. They carried the sick to Jesus, and he healed them. With a simple touch, with only a word, Jesus restored them to perfect health.

These physical cures point us to the nature of the spiritual cure.

In immersion of the person who goes into the water with faith, having decided to serve the living God, spiritual restoration is immediate. The transfer is made right then. Forgiveness is instantaneous. A child of God is born.

We do, of course, need to learn to live the new life, but this life is not less real for that.

You, Lord, have saved us with a word, redeemed us by the blood of Jesus Christ, whose action is effective, and in him we rejoice eternally.

Hold this thought: The Lord forgives with a snap of his fingers, / And not a sin before him lingers.
