To the faithful God will give spiritual bodies, that we may live in heaven. Just as a spiritual transformation takes place at the moment of immersion in water, God will also effect a transformation in the human body.
In order for this to happen, effort on our part is necessary. What we do in the time before the resurrection makes a difference.
And just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, let us also bear the image of the man of heaven.
1 Corinthians 15.49 NET
The verb “let us bear” indicates what we must do, what we must possess, in the present. The bodily transformation will occur only at the resurrection. To what does Paul urge us, then?
What we have in this verse is “a command to show forth the image of Jesus, i.e., to live as citizens of the kingdom that believers will one day inherit” (NET Bible).
The celestial man is not yet visible in the present. We must make him visible by our actions. Only by living the celestial life today may we have hope to bear the spiritual body on the day of Christ.
Living for Christ today results in life with him eternally.
