Brazil’s shameful Carnaval

Here’s an email from a missionary up on the northeast coast of the country. Not everyone goes on a “retreat.” Some, like Randy Short, have taken a missionary journey. But his point is valid and his prayer requests are good. —

Today is the official beginning of Carnival (Mardi Gras) here in Brazil.  It comes right before “Ash Wednesday” when traditionally most Catholics will go to confess past sins to the priest.

There is a lot of drinking, sexual immorality, and just about anything else imaginable that does not contribute to a person’s spiritual life.

Hundreds, maybe even thousands, of Christians in Brazil will travel today to get away from this atmosphere and spend time together, growing in their relationship with God.  These camps are called, oddly enough, “retreats”.  We are retreating from the feast of sin to feast on God and His word only to later return stronger and with God’s help put Satan’s warriors in retreat.
Please pray:
  • For safe travel for everyone, not just Christians;
  • for a renewal of spiritual lives for all Christians;
  • for boldness and courage to announce the good news of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection to those around us when we come back from our “retreats”.
God bless you all and may His peace reign in you and through you,
