Bob and Mary Childress were the first stateside visitors we had in Belo Horizonte after we moved to Brazil. At the time, Bob was an elder at the Baker Heights congregation in Abilene, Tex. When the congregation began the Oldham Lane church on the southeast side of town, the Childresses picked up and moved there, always ready, no matter what their age, for a new challenge.
Recently, Oldham Lane began a memory book for them. I heard about it, and here’s what I sent, today, to be included in the book.
Dear Bob and Mary,
Your faith bolstered us time and again. Your calm eased our worries. Your prayers spoke what we wanted to say to the Lord. Your hospitality welcomed us with open arms and an easy comfort. Your confidence in us inspired us to keep going. Your friendship held us steady. Your generosity prompted frequent thanksgiving to the Lord. Your wisdom put our feet on the ground. Your example showed us what it’s like to see Jesus in daily life.
We thank you two for your years of wonderful service. And we thank God for the privilege of knowing and loving you.
