In this prayer of Christ’s just before Judas’ betrayal, his desire to have the disciples near him expresses the divine will when man was created. God descended in human form to fulfill that will, which man had frustrated by opting for rebellion.
In Christ the nearness of God is realized.
Why does the self-sufficient God want us near him? There are times, and this is one of them, when we should quit asking why and accept the joy of the truth.
